Nursing Prerequisites – The First Step Towards Becoming a Nurse

Nursing prerequisites are the course requirements you’ll need to enroll in a nursing school program. In all cases, you’ll need a high-school diploma in order to become a nurse.

Most programs, whether you’re pursuing a Registered Nurse (RN) degree, Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) certification, or a Bachelors  will select the students based on the GPA of the pre-req courses among other requirements such as a nursing pre-entrance exam. So making the best grades you can in these courses will help your chances of gaining entry. Speak to an advisor at the college you hope to attend and they can help answer all your questions.

For nursing prerequisites, some of the courses you’ll need will depend on the particular nursing program that you are applying to, however there are some general guidelines. To begin with, you want to make sure you’re taking all of your general education courses. This also allows you to focus on your nursing coursework once you are in the nursing program. Some other general requirements would be a human development course (usually under psychology), an introductory or general chemistry class, nutrition, sociology, and algebra.

Keep in mind that while all nursing prerequisites must be completed prior to enrolling in nursing courses, you aren’t necessarily prohibited from starting the application process while still completing some courses. That said, admission is competitive, and the better prepared you are before applying, the more likely you’ll get accepted to the program of your choice.

This means that the better your grades are on your nursing prerequisites, the more options you’ll have when deciding where you want to go.
